Things were slow in the coffee shop, so we got to talking. I asked her what she was going to do after high school.
“Oh,” she said, “I’m going to go into hair dressing. My mom says there’s always security in that kind of work.”
Her tone of voice was flat. She even sounded slightly bored.
Now, if she would have said, “I want to go into hair dressing! I love being creative with hair styles!” I would have said “Great! Wonderful!” But there was no enthusiasm there. So I said, “If you could do anything you wanted, what would you do?”
And she lit up. Her eyes sparkled as she said, “I’ve been singing in a band. I’d love to be a singer, and make that work somehow!”
And I said, “Go for it! Go for your dreams! You’ll never, ever regret it.”
A whole lot of my work, I’ve come to realize, is getting people to dare to do something that makes their eyes light up, that makes their hearts swell. Something that they love.
I give the same advice to everybody:
Dare to dream, and go for it! It’ll all work out somehow financially. I’ve never known a starving artist who actually starved. Our worse-case scenarios very, very rarely come into being.
Life is short, and you have dreams, passions, desires, things you love.
Go for it! You’ll never regret it.
