What we were trying to do in the Sixties was called the “counter-culture.” I never really liked that phrase, because “counter” means “to contradict or oppose.” And I learned very early on that when you rebel against something, when you fight against something, you are empowering that very thing you’re opposing.
What we wanted to create was not a “counter-culture,” but an “enlightened culture” — one that uses the best aspects of every culture on earth, because every culture has something great and wonderful to contribute to the world.
Most of all, I wanted a life that was very different from my parents’ lives — I didn’t want to get up early every day of the week and work really hard all day at a job I didn’t really like and have two or three weeks of vacation a year. I wanted to do what I loved, and to work and play and do nothing when I felt like it. I wanted to create my own schedule. I wanted a life of ease and lightness.
Part of me thought it was not possible, but another part of me said it’s a worthwhile experiment to give it a try. And so I did: I focused on the life of my dreams, and kept affirming I was creating it “in an easy and relaxed manner, a healthy and positive way, in its own perfect time, for the highest good of all.”
I kept affirming those words until they became true in my life. And I realized it’s completely possible to have a life of ease. You can even have success with ease. You have to create it first in your mind, in your imagination and with your words, and then you come to realize how you can create it in your life. Each step becomes obvious.
By doing what we love, we’re creating a new enlightened culture that embraces and encourages and supports every culture and everyone in the world to create the life of their dreams.
So be it. So it is!
